Congratulations to Steve Way and Mark Rinaldo, the 2010 Nomad Classic Champions!
The 2010 Nomad Classic left Canada for the first time and was played in the state of New York. The Peek’n Peak resort was the location for the tournament with two rounds being played on the upper course and one round on the lower course.
The first round of the tournament was an unofficial fun round on the upper course.
Day two was a beautiful sunny day with the official first round to be played on the shorter and easier lower course. Low scores were the norm for this course as all but 3 golfers shot below their assigned handicaps. The most notable low scores were by Steve Way (-11), Sam Masih (-12), and Nomad rookie Aldis Zandbergs who shot an amazing -18! This setup some interesting pairings to be played on the upper course the following day. The top foursome consisted of the rookie pairing of Aldis and Aaron, along with perennial runner-up Nathan and defending champ Dennis, both at -16. In third place was Way and Rinaldo at -13, with the rest of the pack at least 7 strokes back.
Day three on the upper course of Peek’n Peak would see a big change in the fortunes of most golfers. The more challenging upper course had just over half the field shooting above par. Big movers on the day included Gaelen shooting -10, but unfortunately his partner, and other defending champ, Chris Muir, shot a +5 which minimized their comeback. Sam Masih continued his stellar play going under par two days in a row, but his partner Ryan Doyle had his score getting worse at +8 to offset his gains. In the end, terrible scores put up by Aldis and Aaron dropped them out of contention, while a bad round by Nathan Greene brought his team back for a three-way tie for second place. Consistent and steady play by Way and Rinaldo at 2 and 1 under par respectively were enough to give them the lead as the two front runners fell apart. Mark Rinaldo would capture his first Nomad Classic championship, while it would be Steve Way’s third victory in the past 4 years.
Sam Masih’s final round of -5 netted him the Sandbagger award for his combined two-day total of 17-under par, three strokes better Gaelan who had the lowest score of 85 on the tougher upper course, but couldn’t match up with Sam’s 81 on the lower course.
Congratulations was given to Sam for also shooting the lowest stroke play overall with 169 strokes… blowing away next closest golfers Dennis and Gaelan which were at a competitive 176.
